Up at 5am at James Fentiman’s house, dragged myself out of bed and put all the heavy panniers on the bike. Then braved the streets of London to get to BlackHeath. Drizzle and grey skies but I am feeling excited, nervous and just a little wierd because I have thought about this day for so long. Nobody to wave me off but I didn’t invite anyone. I have joined a group through a company called Discover adventure. All 76 people have raised money for their own charities and are nice people doing a nice thing. Even they think I’m crazy for cycling the world. We set off at 7am. Most of my panniers are in a truck, but the one on my bike is heavy. I’m slower than most people but it’s ok. It’s a marathon not a sprint. It’s a wet grey day, and hilly so I struggle except when flying downhill.
We arrive at Dover at around 3.30 to get the ferry. It feels good, very good. Later we arrived in Calais in the pouring rain and cycled to a hotel. Oddly we had our first accidents as some people had an argument with the tram tracks.
Total cycled on day 1? 80 miles or 129km.
