Tuesday 16th July was a late start. I took the train with Paola to Aviles in the morning. Pablo told me that the road west from Gijon is ugly, boring and industrial. So I took the local knowledge and started from Aviles instead.
Aviles was a nice town but after an orange juice I said see you later to Paola and started pedaling. It is still a Camino route and the hills started immediately.
I stopped near Cudillero where there was a palace. I’m not househunting but if I was this would have been spot on.
Everywhere I went was either up or down and I climbed about 1000m in total.
I stopped at the top of a hill to take a photo of the sign for “playa del silencio”, the most tempting offer I had seen all day. An old guy told me not to go that way. It was for walkers not cyclists apparently. I smiled and said ok. I would stick to the carratera.
Every town said it was the most beautiful in Asturias. I must admit there were some very pretty gardens with some outrageous hydrangea bushes.
There is one photo below of the camino walking route which looks like god is saying “this way”. It is an impossible route on a touring bike so I guess I will be sticking to the secular cycling route. I am sure I will return to walk the camino one day!
2225km so far 🙂
